Scalp Micropigmentation: An Introduction

The Short Answer

Scalp micropigmentation, often called SMP, places many tiny dots of pigment on the scalp to create the appearance of hair density. It does not grow hair. Up close, the dots are visible as small points; from a normal distance, the scalp looks fuller. It is usually considered by people with a thinning crown or parting, fine hair that leaves the scalp visible, or a short hairstyle where density matters.

Dots, Not Lines

The key idea is simple: lines draw a shape, dots build density. SMP repeats small dots across an area such as the crown, the parting, or the temples. The size and shade of the dots, and how closely they are placed, decide how dense the result looks. The aim is a result that looks natural in daylight and at a normal distance, not a painted surface.

How SMP Differs from Hairline Design

Hairline work designs the boundary of the forehead: the shape, position, and curve of the line. SMP works on the surface behind that line. Some people need only a hairline design, some need only density, and some consider both together. Which fits depends on the scalp, the hairline, and what the person wants to change. A consultation looks at both before deciding.

What a Consultation Checks

First, the scalp itself: whether it is dry, oily, or prone to irritation. Second, the hair as it is now: thickness, style, length, and the direction of the parting. The range and shade of the dots change with these. Third, the result the person wants: whether less visible scalp is enough, or a clearly denser look is wanted. A clear goal makes the design possible.

Before and After

Before the procedure, avoid irritating the scalp and arrive as advised at consultation. Afterwards, avoid rubbing the scalp, and be careful with sun, sweat, and long exposure to water while the skin recovers. Do not pick at flaking. The colour settles into a more natural tone after recovery. If density looks uneven once healing is complete, a touch-up is decided at consultation after looking at the result. How long the effect lasts varies with scalp condition and daily habits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does SMP grow hair? No. It creates the look of density with pigment dots. Understanding that before deciding matters more than anything else.

Is it the same as a hairline procedure? No. A hairline procedure designs a line; SMP fills an area with dots. They solve different problems.

Who should think carefully first? Anyone expecting new hair growth, or anyone unsure what result they want. A consultation should make the expected result concrete before any procedure.
