Eyeliner semi-permanent makeup should make eyes look defined, not made up. At Gyul Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul, eyeliner fills the spaces between the lashes so the lash line looks fuller and the eyes look clearer, without a heavy drawn line. Thickness and tail are adjusted to your eye shape and eyelid type. Final design and colour are decided at consultation, and results vary from person to person.

Will eyeliner make my eyes look smaller?
It should not, when thickness and tail are matched to your eyes. The key is how much line is drawn. Filling only the spaces between the lashes defines the eye without closing it in. A line drawn thicker than the eye shape needs can make eyes look heavy or smaller. At consultation, your artist will check eye shape, eyelid type, and how much of the line shows when your eyes are open, and will explain the thickness and tail that suit you. Check the design before treatment, with your eyes open and at normal distance.
Different eyes need different approaches. With a visible double eyelid, the line shows clearly, so a thinner line and a tail that follows the eye shape are usually enough. With a hidden double eyelid or a single eyelid, the line can be hidden by the lid, so filling between the lashes is the priority and the line must be checked with the eyes open. With smaller eyes, filling firmly from the front of the lash line is often more effective than extending a long tail. A long tail that does not suit the eye can drag the eye down. Bring photos of lines you like and lines you do not like, and say whether you usually wear eyeliner, and how thick you wear it.
What does eyeliner treatment feel like?
The eye area is close to the mucous membrane, so it is more sensitive than the brow area for many people. Numbing is applied carefully, and your artist will explain numbing and aftercare at the appointment. Tears during treatment are common. Tell your artist if you need a pause. Sensitivity varies from person to person. Ask about anything you are unsure about before treatment begins, including what to do if your eyes water, if you wear contact lenses, or if you have sensitive eyes or eye conditions. Tell the clinic in advance about eye conditions, allergies, and medicines that may affect treatment or healing.
Do not wear eye makeup to the appointment unless the clinic tells you otherwise, and ask in advance about contact lenses, eyelash extensions, and eye treatments. After treatment, do not rub your eyes. Follow the aftercare sheet you receive.
What does healing look like?
Swelling for 1 to 2 days is common after eyeliner work. A cold compress can help, as directed on the aftercare sheet you receive. For 2 to 3 days, crusting, dryness, or itching around the eyes can occur. Do not rub your eyes and do not pick at flakes. Keep the area clean and dry as directed, and avoid saunas, swimming, and long sun exposure in the early healing period. Spicy food is best avoided for about 3 days, as advised in the clinic's aftercare guide. Eye makeup is best resumed after about 1 week, as directed at the clinic. Colour often looks darker at first and softens as the skin heals. The final result cannot be judged reliably in the first few days.
If swelling, pain, redness, discharge, or fever gets worse, seek local medical care promptly and contact the clinic. Do not wait until you are home to ask about worsening symptoms, especially if you are visiting Seoul for only a few days.
How long does eyeliner last?
Eyeliner is designed to fade over time, usually over 2 to 3 years. Retention varies by person and depends on skin type, aftercare, sun exposure, eye rubbing, eye treatments, and other individual factors. As colour fades, ask the clinic about review and follow-up. Do not assume a fixed retouch schedule. Colour may fade unevenly, and some residual colour can remain. Removal can be difficult, so decide at consultation with the long term in mind. If you later want the shape changed, ask at consultation whether the faded line can be adjusted, and whether a separate consultation is needed first. A shape change is not automatic in every case.

Questions about eyeliner
Will my eyes look smaller?
They should look clearer, not smaller, when thickness and tail are matched to your eye shape and eyelid type. Filling between the lashes is the core of a natural result. Check the design with your eyes open before treatment.
Does eyeliner suit hooded or single eyelids?
It can, when the design is checked with the eyes open and filling between the lashes is the priority. Tell the clinic about your eyelid type and bring photos of the look you want.
How long does eyeliner last compared with brows?
Eyeliner is usually described as lasting 2 to 3 years, but retention varies by person, aftercare, and eye care. Ask at consultation how follow-up works for you.
